Arsenal Vault comes in two flavors: a Windows desktop application and a cloud-based web app. Same features, different philosophies. Let's break down the tradeoffs so you can pick the right one.
The Quick Answer
Choose Desktop If:
- • You want data on your machine only
- • You don't need mobile/multi-device access
- • You prefer one-time annual payments
- • You want to work offline
- • You're deeply privacy-conscious
Choose Cloud If:
- • You want access from any device
- • You need mobile access at the range
- • You prefer monthly billing flexibility
- • You want automatic backups
- • You might share with a spouse or partner
Data Storage & Privacy
Desktop Version
Your data lives in a local SQLite database on your Windows PC. It never leaves your machine unless you manually copy it. The database is stored in your user profile folder and encrypted at rest.
Backup is your responsibility. We recommend copying your data folder to an external drive or secure cloud storage periodically. If your hard drive dies and you don't have a backup, your data is gone.
Cloud Version
Your data is stored in our secure cloud infrastructure. Each user gets their own encrypted database. Your data is protected in transit (HTTPS) and at rest (AES-256 encryption).
Automatic backups are included. We maintain redundant copies of your data. If your laptop gets stolen, your inventory is safe in the cloud.
Privacy Note
Both versions keep your data private. With Desktop, it's local-only. With Cloud, it's encrypted and isolated per-user. We don't sell data, we don't analyze your collection, and we don't share information with third parties.
Access & Convenience
Desktop Version
- Windows only (no Mac or Linux yet)
- Works offline, no internet required after install
- Single-device access (unless you sync the data folder manually)
- No mobile app
Cloud Version
- Access from any browser (Windows, Mac, Linux, tablet)
- Mobile-friendly web interface
- Log in from multiple devices
- Requires internet connection
- Vault sharing available (let a spouse or gunsmith access your collection)
If you're the type who wants to check your ammo inventory while standing in the gun store, Cloud is the way to go. If you only manage your collection from your home office, Desktop works fine.
Pricing Comparison
| Plan | Cloud (Monthly) | Desktop (Annual) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (up to 10 firearms) | $4.99/mo | $44.99/yr |
| Pro (up to 20 firearms + reloading) | $9.99/mo | $89.99/yr |
| Ultimate (unlimited + vault sharing) | $19.99/mo | $179.99/yr |
Desktop is cheaper long-term. If you commit to an annual Desktop license, you save about 25% compared to paying monthly for Cloud. But Cloud gives you flexibility to cancel anytime.
Feature Comparison
Both versions include:
- Firearms inventory with photos and serial numbers
- Ammunition tracking
- Accessories management
- Maintenance logs
- PDF reports (collection value, inventory, C&R bound book)
- CSV import/export
- Activity history
Cloud-only features:
- Vault sharing (invite someone to view or manage your collection)
- Multi-device sync
- Automatic cloud backups
Can I Switch Later?
Yes. You can export your data from either version as a CSV file and import it into the other. It's not a one-click migration, but it's doable in about 15 minutes.
If you start with Desktop and later decide you want mobile access, you can move to Cloud. If you start with Cloud and decide you want local-only storage, you can switch to Desktop.
The Bottom Line
Go Desktop if you value local-only storage, don't need mobile access, and prefer paying annually.
Go Cloud if you want access anywhere, automatic backups, and the flexibility to share your vault.
Both versions have a free trial. Try the one that sounds right, and switch if it doesn't work out.
